Sunrise Day Camp\u2013Greater Washington brings the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings ages 3 \u00bd-16 throughout the Greater Washington area. A program of the Pozez Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Northern Virginia, Sunrise provides an inclusive summer day camp, year-round programs, and in-hospital recreational activities\u2014all offered completely free of charge. Sunrise programs foster community, inspire confidence, and replace fear with friendship, ensuring that families facing pediatric cancer feel seen, supported, and never alone.
\nA childhood cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. Parents often juggle unpaid leave and mounting medical expenses, siblings experience anxiety and isolation, and children undergoing treatment lose access to the social connections and everyday joys that define childhood. These challenges can have lasting emotional and developmental effects, yet opportunities for play, connection, and healing are frequently out of reach during times of crisis.
\nSunrise fills this critical gap in care by providing joyful, medically supported experiences designed to meet both emotional and physical needs. Our compassionate staff, engaging and developmentally appropriate activities, on-site nurses, and fully accessible facilities create a safe and nurturing environment for every child. Through summer camp, year-round programming, and family-centered outings, children with cancer and their siblings are able to simply be kids.
\nWhat started as a small program reaching 44 children in summer 2022 grew to 134 children in summer 2025, and we expect to serve more than 150 participants in summer 2026, reflecting both growing demand and meaningful impact. As we continue to expand in 2026, we remain committed to removing all possible financial, emotional, and logistical barriers so that every family can access the joy, connection, and healing they deserve.<\/p>\n
