The program runs for three months and is designed to introduce participants to the green economy through an engaging, place-based learning experience rooted in community and environmental stewardship. Using honey bees as a gateway, Fellows explore the connections between pollinators, food systems, biodiversity, climate, and environmental justice while building practical skills and confidence.

Throughout the Fellowship, participants take part in several core program components. The first is hands-on beekeeping education, where Fellows learn how to work safely around bees, conduct hive inspections, identify hive components, understand colony behavior, and support seasonal hive management. The second is environmental education, which helps Fellows connect beekeeping to larger issues such as sustainability, urban ecosystems, and the environmental challenges facing New York City communities. The third component is leadership development, where Fellows build communication, teamwork, and public speaking skills through group discussions, presentations, and collaborative learning. The fourth is workforce readiness, which includes exposure to green careers, a Green Jobs Panel, and conversations about next steps through Bee U NYC’s Green Jobs Pipeline.

In addition to weekly sessions, Fellows participate in field trips, partner-led experiences, and Environmental Action Projects that deepen their understanding of local environmental issues and community-based solutions. The Fellowship also includes asynchronous learning, such as short educational videos and quizzes, to reinforce core beekeeping knowledge outside of in-person sessions.

The program concludes with a graduation ceremony, where Fellows celebrate their accomplishments, demonstrate what they have learned, and are recognized for completing the program. For many participants, the Urban Beekeeping Fellowship is their first paid program and first direct exposure to green career pathways, making it an important entry point into continued leadership, learning, and employment opportunities with Bee U NYC.

Total Project Budget: 147,488

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential):

Project Duration:
Geographical Area Served:
Age Group To Be Served:

Contact Information

Contact Prefix (Mr,Mrs etc.):
Contact First Name:
Contact Last Name:
Contact Title:
Contact Phone:
Contact Email:

Hermanowski Family Foundation Initial Request Form Organization Name: Bee U NYC Legal Name (if Different): Bee U Inc Also Known As: Mailing Address: 160 Tompkins Ave #40989 City: Staten Island State: New York Postal Code: 10304 Main Phone: 3476422709 Main Fax: Organization Website: https://beeunyc.org/ Employer ID Number: EIN: 88-1156617 Organization Tax Status: 501(c)3 Non-Profit Proposal […]

[3

post-10271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-grants
["GET
