Take-A-Hike seeks support to expand its outdoor wellness program for at-risk children and families in Passaic County, New Jersey. The project provides safe, guided hiking experiences and nature-based activities that promote physical health, mental well-being, confidence, and environmental awareness among underserved youth ages 8\u201317.<\/p>\n
Many of the children served have limited access to safe outdoor recreation due to financial barriers, lack of transportation, and limited exposure to structured wellness programs. Take-A-Hike removes these barriers by providing transportation, necessary hiking equipment, safety supplies, trained supervision, and program coordination at little or no cost to participating families.<\/p>\n
The program operates through organized group hikes held throughout the year in local parks and natural areas. Each session includes safety briefings, guided hiking, and interactive activities focused on teamwork, leadership, healthy living, and environmental stewardship. Trained staff and volunteers mentor participants and create a supportive environment where youth can build confidence, develop social skills, and experience the benefits of nature.<\/p>\n
Funding will support key program expenses including transportation to hiking locations, safety and hiking equipment, program supplies, volunteer training, and outreach to community partners. These resources will allow Take-A-Hike to expand participation and ensure the program remains accessible to underserved youth and families.<\/p>\n
Through consistent outdoor engagement, the project aims to increase physical activity, reduce stress, strengthen social connections, and build resilience among participants.
